Spots to attend The Original Adult Gymnastics Camp are always coveted, and this year was no different. We sold almost all of the slots available the first week registration launched in early November.
This was the first year in camp history that every athlete we were expecting showed up at the door. Kudos to this committed group! Athletes ranged in age from age 20 to a young 75 😊. They were able to train on the 4 women's gymnastics events: vault, bars, beam and floor as well as a Tumbltrak rotation and a Tramp/Strap Bar/Dance rotation.
This year we had a large percentage of returning athletes and boasted 100% returning staff, making the event feel like a family reunion of sorts! We also featured a couple of new Recovery Options to help with stamina throughout the weekend. These new offerings including an active Recovery clinic by Ariel as well as Complimentary Bemer therapy sessions with Dave Burchuck, Physical Therapist.
...all of that and more happened at this camp!
Our camp featured 13 hours of training. In addition to the three sessions of fully coached event rotations (vault, bars, beam, floor, TumbleTrak, Tramp/Strap Bar/Dance), there were a number of additional options during the 3-hour open gym session including:
We warmed as a big group for each session to allow for plenty of time for intergroup mingling. There were some fun games (with prizes!) before splitting up into our training groups by skill level for the events. Various beginner, intermediate and advanced groups were offered and there were a total of 6 groups. The groups were set by the camp director Gina Paulhus prior to the start of the event to ensure appropriate training environments for all. Athletes were permitted to skip an event or double up on an event to their liking. They could also switch groups as needed if they have a different skill level on one event to another. We are coorporative about putting besties together in the same group when skill level is similar enough, so don't be shy to request that next year if you'd like!
Each day not only several hours of gymnastics training plus the opportunity for attending group meals with other campers. This year we had Chipotle at the gym Friday night and a lunch at a classic New England Seafood restaurant on Saturday. We also greatly enjoyed our gymnastics watch party Saturday night where we got to watch the Senior Womens Session of the US Classic together! All meals were provided as an add-on basis and included ample vegan selections. While meals are certainly not required, it's where some of the best friendships are formed and we highly recommend partipating in at least one!
Our staff was more well-equipped than ever to offer the spotting you crave. In addition to spotting, the coaches were capable of setting up personalized drills to help you achieve that dream skill you have always wanted.
Our popular Athletic Trainer Meghan Mello was on hand to assist with any physical concerns. She provides acute care as well as treatments for chronic injuries at camp. Her treatments always seem to sell out, and this was was no different!
Meghan has been at every single camp we have had. She even wanted to double check that her wedding wouldn't fall on the same weekend as camp. 😊 Her husband is Joe Mello, one of our fabulous coaches who has been at camp many times, both as an athlete and as a coach! Dave Burchuk of Lighthouse Physical Therapy was on hand along with his wife JoAnn to provide complimentery Bemer recovery treatments. And with Bryan Paulhus, Gina's husband here as "emotional support" and our Portsmouth Tour Guide, this event truly was a family affair!
We had a goal board where athletes were able to add the goal skills they got at camp! The board was full by the end of the event 😀
Each camper who made it through Day 3 got an award! It was well earned - we did 13 hours of gymnastics over 3 Days! This is more gymnastics than a lot of the athletes usually do in an entire month. Kudos to all!
Due to inclimate weather, we adjusted our plan and hit up a local brewery in downtown Portsmouth. This did not disappoint!
A Great Big Thank You to each and every one who made the trip to Atlantic Gymnastics to participate in this weekend. YOU are what make it special and we do camp for you!! We also want to thank Atlantic Gymnastics for accommodating us, as well as our incredible staff who made it all happen. Tony Retrosi, owner of Atlantic Gymnastics has always been a supporter of adult athletes, and we are very greatful for that.
